Majel Barret Roddenberry Passes Away
My heart broke a little bit with this news.
Majel Barret-Roddenberry, (widow of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry) died Thursday Dec. 18 due to Leukemia.
Roddenberry was involved in the "Star Trek" universe for more than four decades.
Personally, I really enjoyed her role as in Star Trek: The Next Generation as the Betazoid Ambassador Lwaxana Troi, mother of ship's counselor Deanna Troi.
She will be missed.

Kuroshitsuji DS Game
Destructoid reports that the wonderful anime, Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler) is going to get it's own DS game.
Square Enix owns the rights to the show, so I have high hopes that it will be very cool, not that it will ever be released anywhere outside of Japan. However, I can always keep a dim hope of playing dish washing minigames.

Wolverine Origins Trailer Out
So, if you are like me and didn't sit through The Day The Earth Stood Still, then you missed the Wolverine Origins trailer. Until today. Trailer is up and good quality. You can view it on myspace (and it looks like Facebook as well) if you add X-Men Origins as a friend. Tacky, but worth it, I'd say. Go to myspace.com/x-menorigins to take a peek.
The official W:O site will be http://www.x-menorigins.com/

She Hulk : Cosmic Collision
Oddly enough, it's written by Peter David who has previously put Shulkie on the emo train. This book takes her back to a more positive place (although it has sad bits). It's She Hulk as it should be and frankly, a bit of a slap in the face to fans. It's like PAD is saying 'I was always capable of writing in this style, I just chose not to'. Thanks PAD, show us how great it could have been before you dump us.

Samurai Showdown Anthology Delay
Samurai Showdown Anthology was initially due to drop in stores in December. However, when I double checked today, it wasn't even on EB Games website. A quick Google search shows me that the date has been pushed back to either 2/24/2009 as seen here - or just a generic 2009. I was looking forward to playing all 7 games and not buying them individually on the Virtual Console. Now I get to wait. Again.

I place the blame firmly on PAD's awful run on this book. She Hulk: Emo Bounty Hunter never worked. If it takes cancellation to de-emo-fy her, then so be it.

Double Blind Character Selection
OMYGAH WHY DOESN'T SOUL CALIBUR 4 HAVE THIS?!
Okay I am done shouting now - Destructoid posted a link to Sirlin.net with all the new features implemented in Street Fighter HD Remix. It's a great list and there are things that all online fighters should have. (like double blind character selection, Soul Calibur!!)
Read it all here.
By the way, if you are wondering wth double blind character selection is, it's this (from the article)
7) Double-blind character selection online. When you’re playing online, don’t you hate it when your opponent refuses to pick a character until the last possible moment because he’s trying to make you pick first? He wants to see who you pick so he can pick the best character to beat yours. In HD Remix, all online play has double-blind character selection. That means that you cannot see who your opponent picked or even where his character selection box is until both of you finish picking your characters. Now there’s no reason to stall on this screen, you might as well just pick your character right away.

Misa Misa on the Brain? (Maria from Castlevania Judgement)
Maria is jealous of all the other girls giant breasts. Maybe she turned a little stupid from looking so much like Misa Misa.
Also, her voice actress sounds SO familiar. I want to say it's the same voice actress from Soul Calibur 4, who voices Xianghua.

first the birds, now the Beetle
More internet rumblings confirmed....Blue Beetle is getting canceled.
Okay, so that's two DC books that I read down, two to go (Trinity & Wonder Woman).
Apparently DC books that aren't epic space operas are left to die. HARSH.
The good news is that Jaimie will still be the current Blue Beetle. The other good news is that Barbara Gordon will be getting an Oracle miniseries after BoP's death.
Small favors I guess.

Read the newsarama article, there's a lot of details in there about...well, everything.
edit: it seems that Manhunter got the boot as well, right after the relaunch. Crikey.

My World, My Way trailer
from the email:
"Attention, please! I am sick of RPGs with gender-confused boy heroes with their spikey hair and ginormous swords living out an absurd ultimate fantasy. Is having your village burn down all you really need to be a champion? And a scar on your face is supposed to make you... What, dark and brooding? Try uncoordinated.
"In My World, My Way, I can change the landscape when it doesn't suit me, make monsters give me more money, and always take the first turn in battle. I can also make enemies go away if I don't feel like fighting, shut down their magic abilities, and even make quests solve themselves. Sure, other RPGs let you explore lands and fight monsters, but how many of them let you change the world around you?

My Favorite Rose...
My friends were discussing this via email the other day, when Cammy was finally verified to be in SFIV. Freyhon wondered if Rose was going to be added. I had hopes for Rose, but expected nothing. Well, Pushing Play was on the Shoryuken forums and found what seems to be photo evidence of Rose! I can't play her worth a darn anymore but I'd definitely put the time in to learn her fighting style again.

RIP, BoP
The Onion's AV club verifies some rumblings I have heard around the internet (and apparently on an episode of AotS I missed) that Birds of Prey, Nightwing and Robin are all getting canceled. I'm hoping this is a gimmick for RIP and drops new issue #1s for people to jump in on. I think BoP was already cancelled once, so I can't lose hope yet.

Where Did I Go? (tl;dr)
So, what happened to me? Well, life got in the way in a major way.
First my Dell laptop died right after the warranty expired. They wanted 300 dollars to extend it a year and I thought that was unreasonable. (I still do). After that I ended up in a long process of trying to get it repaired, in the end after lots and lots of driving to the repair shop an hour away, the Dell breathed it's last. It has since been replaced by a wonderful (knock on wood) little HP G60 120US Notebook PC (with a two year warranty from Office Depot). In other news, there's been some illness in the family (which I'd prefer not to go into detail about) as well as flu season deciding to kick my butt. Twice. I am currently fighting Round Two of a sinus cold. Round one was about a month ago. Additionally, my classes are a bit of a pain right now as well. Very intense. I am attempting to graduate and was told on Monday that there was a class that they will not waive, after they previously said they would. I am going to continue to fight this.
So, that's the personal crap. Regarding the blog itself, an industry insider was on Twitter, tweeting about how many blogs are useless because they just repost news found elsewhere. He wasn't talking about me specifically, but it definitely applies. However, I have no inside sources so I can't really give you any original news. I am more of a spaghetti strainer of geek information. I try to bring you stuff that's relevant without wading through all the stuff that's not as interesting or fun. Does the world need another personal blog? Should I change my format? I am still not sure. I will probably keep it as is for now. However, it's always in the back of my mind.
In geek news, it's really been a wonderful time. Comics have been great recently, with the notable exception of Greg Land working on Uncanny X-Men. Ugh, that guy. It's a shame because there is some really wonderful writing going on and the return of the Hellfire Club makes me one happy fangirl.
I'm broke as a joke, but I found the amazing PaperbackSwap.com and traded away some novels and used my points for my manga fix. I've found new series that I probably would have skipped over in the store and got started on the Trinity Blood light novels. I recommend this site HIGHLY. It has been a great experience.
I go through geek phases and while my SO tells me I am firmly lodged in the 'comic book geek' category, I have really come back into being a gamer lately. This is in no small part to Izuna 2 and Lego Batman being made of pure win. Also I got an original X-Box for my birthday. I had missed that console entirely so I am going back and checking out all the exclusives (on the cheap!) that I missed. It's so cool to walk out of Gamestop with 4 games and only having spent 12 bucks. (plus 5 credit). A friend told me about a website called The Backloggery – it tracks what games you are playing, what you've beat, and the like. I am hanging around there a lot these days. They run live streams on Wednesdays and Sundays. So far the community is very cool and not clique-ish. Also highly recommended. My personal backlog is woefully incomplete, but I work on it when I can.
So, that's where I have been and where I am. I expect things to stay pretty intense/interesting through December. I will do my best to be more vigilant on my blog. For those that hung around, thanks for your patience.
- EG.

Alan Ball, don't make Sookie a ho, kthx-
Yahoo TV wrote a nice little article about True Blood, a series I have obviously been looking forward to. It worries me a little though. It seems that Alan Ball, the producer and person that adapted the books to tv, has decided to sex it up a bit.
I've read the first six books, I am pretty familiar with Sookie's Bon Temps. (the small town where she lives) I understand that Sookie's brother Jason has always been a himbo, but do they need to slut it up so much with Sookie and Bill? It's true the attraction was always there for those two, but it was more of an intrigue with Sookie, as she can't read vampire thoughts for whatever reason, and Bill's silence was a treat.
From the article:
"True Blood" also pushes the content boundaries of premium cable, with plenty of extravagantly gushing arteries and over-the-top bedroom antics to rival Showtime's "Californication" -- all mixed with a good dose of Southern gothic goofiness.
"The books are violent and that's part of the appeal," he says. "It's visceral and predatory and unapologetically sexual. And it's unapologetically romantic in the sense of an old-fashioned romance novel."
The Sookie Stackhouse/Southern Vampire series aren't supposed to emulate the massive amounts of smut that the Laurell K Hamilton books have turned into. (which is really too bad because the first few were great). Sookie gets laid, sure - but not a lot and not right off the bat.
Like I said, I worry.

Animal Themed Marvel Characters
I am really digging Marvel's Twitter Surveys (and not just the ones I think up! Heh!) The most recent Twitter survey is as follows:
Who's your favorite animal-themed Marvel character (not just named after an animal like Wolverine)?
Thery're tying this in with their 'Take 10' list. Now, Wolverine and/or Spiderman are likely to win, but let's think outside of the box shall we? I voted Wolfsbane. (hell yesh!)
As usual, Marvel's Twitter feed is here if you want to vote too.

My Aquarium Update
So, I mentioned small fish being a bit too small on My Aquarium. Well, I set the tank to run while I printed a couple things and if you just leave it to run, the 'game' will pick a random fish to focus on, zoom in and follow him around for a little while, then switch to another fish. That's cool! I can see the details in my tiny danios and tetras now. Best 5 dollar expenditure ever.
Picture taken from official site.
I don't currently have any Angelfish in my tank.

Infinite Mario Kart item hack
Nintendo Wii Fanboy posted a video showing a player with infinite blue shells. I clicked on it to see the related videos. I thought the blue shell hack was only for blue shells. However, I found videos for infinite Bullet Bills as well as Infinite Lightning. Obviously, these are hacks. I am personally not a fan of hacks. I play to have fun, not for the singular goal of winning everything evar omg.
The hacks come through a program called Ocarina, which in turn is located in a hack channel called The Homebrew Channel. I thought about linking to these sites but I'm not a huge fan of Wii hacking/modding, so I'm just going to say Google it if you must.
My Aquarium on the VC
The small fish are very small on the screen, but after watching the trailer (below) I see that they are most likely fry (baby fish) that I need to feed so they can grow. There are a bunch of 'locked' fish that I can't see yet, so game-like aspects have been attached onto the download. I look forward to relaxing and watching my fish grow.

Happy Birthday Ramen!!!
Randomly searching around Wakachan (pretty much the more well organized cousin of 4chan - although still full of NSFW images) I found that August 25th (today) is Instant Ramen's 50th birthday! Thanks Anonymous!
From Momofuku Ando's wikipedia page:
With Japan still suffering from a shortage of food in the post-war era, the Ministry of Health tried to encourage people to eat bread made from wheat flour that was supplied by the United States. Ando wondered why bread was recommended instead of noodles, which were more familiar to Japanese people. The Ministry's response was that noodle companies were too small and unstable to satisfy supply needs, so Ando decided to develop the production of noodles by himself. The experience convinced him that "Peace will come to the world when the people have enough to eat."
On August 25, 1958, at the age of 48, and after months of trial and error experimentation to perfect his flash-frying method, Ando marketed the first package of precooked instant noodles. Called Chikin Ramen (チキンラーメン, Chikin Ramen?), after the original chicken flavour.
Proper True Blood trailer
First I found out they were making a TV series of a book series I enjoy. Then, Anna Paquin is cast as the main character. Then I spy with my little...uh...ear (work with me here people!) a Concrete Blonde song in the trailer. (starts at 1:14 and ends at 1:42 if you're wondering) I don't know if they could cater to me any more if they tried. The song was Bloodletting, naturally.

Lego Batman Keychain Promo
Just found out the other day while wandering in to Gamestop, that there is a promotional offer for Lego Batman preorders. If you pre order the game (which looks to be full of wonderful and awesome) you get one of four Lego Batman keychains. the options are Batman, Robin, Joker and Catwoman. My local Gamestop said they could not get a specific keychain for me, but went ahead and put a note in the computer for a Catwoman anyway. Odds are, if you get in early to pick it up, then your odds of picking a keychain go up dramatically. So, MORE incentive to pick up Lego Batman. *sigh*
Gamestop site with preorder info
EBGames site with preorder info
Also of major note, the PS2 version of the game is $29.99, while the 360, Wii and PS3 versions are $49.99. I only have a Wii & a PS2 so it was a tough call. Save money and risk waggle controls or have faith in the Wiimote...

Blog Drop - Japan-esque Edition
Some news that may amuse you. Or horrify you, either way.
Marvel is printing a mini-series called Big Hero Six. They're "Japan's top heroes" (ssh, no one tell any of the Super Sentai groups).
Their names/powers are as follows:
Hiro (the most brilliant mind in Japan), Baymax (his reliable synthetic entity), Honey Lemon (with her super-powered purse), and Gogo Tomago (an unstoppable explosive ball of energy)!
Gogo Tamago? Like, Gogo Egg?
I suppose after watching Sorcerer Hunters that I should be used to food names. No worse than Carrot Glaces or Chocolate Misu I suppose.
But not the tomato, it's mine.
--------------
In other news, ANN reports that Kamen no Maid guy volume 9 will bundle with a dvd with one episode that was essentially "too hot for tv". As you may have guessed (clever you), it's the essential hot springs vacation episode.

Unlazy - Another great artist in Artist's Alley
Kay Monster - my friend got a great sketch of all of the Flashes over the ages. Cool chickie!

Wired Talks Crap About Nintendo
Let's take what Wired said about Nintendo's E3 Press Conference. The headline reads Gallery: Nintendo Keeps Casual, Ignores Hard-Core at E3. If you didn't watch the video(s) of the press conference or read one of the many liveblogs that covered it, you could easily believe that Nintendo shunned 'hard core' gamers. This statement, however, is bullshit. Reggie specifically addresses the fact that they are NOT leaving the 'veteran' gamers in the dark and that they want to appeal to all audiences. It wasn't all about Animal Crossing - some games that 'hardcore gamers' may enjoy were the new Grand Theft Auto : Chinatown Wars for the DS and the new Call of Duty: World at War game on the Wii. Those games are NOT targeted at casual gamers. In fact, they'd probably run screaming.
I'm not a Nintendo apologist, but I am VERY tired of people talking junk about Nintendo just because they can. And yes, I am excited as all hell about Animal Crossing and I'm not ashamed to say it.

Link Drop - Atlus Compels Me to Game edition
Gaming... I still do it! I swear! It's just in smaller doses these days - as seen by my focus on casual games on the Wii and DS games I can take with me.
Well I caved in today and put a fiver down on Izuna 2. I will allegedly get a mini poster upon pickup. Atlus really sold me on the new tag system and the crapton of playable characters added. Well done Atlus, you win this round.
Speaking of Atlus, they sent me a wonderful email announcing Persona 4. Oh snap! Enjoy this video as much as I did.

The Wii gets a fighting game! And it's Castlevania! Neat!

Japan gets a D. Gray Man video game. Meanwhile I turn tints and shades of green with jealousy. Gah I hope this show takes hold in the US like Naruto and Bleach did. It utterly deserves to.

Kotaku uncovers the Samba De Amigo maraca attachments for the Wii-mote. Cha cha CHA!
Cool website, nice design - Girls Don't Game
Spend more time online, but maybe a little less money. Yet another MMO is released on the masses - Dream of Mirror Online.
Found a great wii-friendly radio station called Finetune. Check it out, it's good times.
The Gail Simone mini post
Well, here are a couple of news bits about GS and her work on Wonder Woman and the upcoming Secret Six title. (which is already on my pull list at the comic shop, kthx)
Here's a video interview at Wizard World Chicago (I think)
Here's some coverage of the Wonder Woman panel at WWC - Rucka, Simone and Lopresti. A panel of epic proportions to be sure.
Crikey, I feel like Kotaku when they cover J Allard. ~_~;

For the Locals: Sale at the LCS
Emerald City is running a nice sale. From their email:
Because of the Independence Day holiday, new comics will arrive Thursday the 10th instead of Wednesday the 9th. And that means our "Wednesdays That New Comics Don't Arrive" SALE!
On Wednesday, July 9th, buy one trade paperback / graphic novel, and get one of equal or lesser value for half price!
You can do this for as many books as you'd like -- if you buy five books, you get five books for half price!
Also, all back issue comics are 20% off!
-----------
I'll wait to pick up my X-Factor Visionaries till Wed. and add Secret Six - get both for about 25 bucks. Not too shabby! I need to find out the timeline of when Secret Six was released - I assume after Villians United, but if that's right, then some of the lineup doesn't make sense. ?_?

Izuna 2 - Do Want
I have no idea what it is about this dungeon crawler that I liked so much in the first version, but I really want to pick up Izuna 2. Harsh tease with the 'wandering merchants' in the dungeon. (see Wandering Vendor comic)
Here are a couple promo vids for the game. I know it looks like a GBA game, but something about it is just really addictive.

MK vs DC - Catwoman Confirmed
They've essentially verified Catwoman and have pictures to prove it. (although calling Catwoman a villain is utterly off the mark)
That leaves Prototypical Super Hero, Mystical Super Hero, Amazon Queen, Crazy Villain, and Military Superhero among the unidentified generic descriptors of DC Universe kombatants.
Kotaku commenters are calling as follows:
Prototypical Super Hero - Shazam or Superman (Supes already announced?)
Mystical Super Hero - Zatanna or Dr Fate
Amazon Queen -Wonder Woman (no s**t, Sherlock)
Crazy Villain - Joker
and Military Superhero - one of the 8,000 Green Lanterns, likely Jordan or Stewart
Catwoman, Wonder Woman AND Zatanna? Urgh, I have to start saving my pennies. They got me by the throat on this one.
Nerd Moment: (for those reading Wonder Woman right now) WW can't use her lasso on most of the Outworld guys, especially Scorpion, because lasso on the soulless is BAD TIMES.
Ooh ooh, cheap excuse for Lego Batman video clip!

X-Factor Visionaries - Meeeeemories.....
I won't be wishy washy about my opinion of Peter David's current work. It's really dark and while it fits (current) X-Factor from time to time, it really, really doesn't work in She Hulk. Even though they explained why she's so damn cranky these days, it was still hard to muster sympathy for her. Especially when the person who was in the right at the time was Mallory friggin Book. /groan.
I don't think PAD has gone the way of Claremont - i.e. from amazingly wonderful to WTF Mate. It's a sad day when I read Genext and think 'It wasn't awful! Hooray!' Claremont is another heartbreaking tangent that I won't make you suffer through right now. Maybe later - HaHAH.
At any rate, this trade paperback will be in my subscription box next week and I'll be sure to let you know if my nostalgia for this storyline stands the test of time.
