New Year's Greetings -

Since I won't be here at midnight, I'll pass along New Year's Greetings to you now. :)

XMen 206 - Conspiracy Theory Shot Down!

Well I know a few of you haven't read XMen 206 yet, so all I can tell you is that Rogue isn't the traitor, it's someone else. (no spoilers from me)

So, that's the good news. Bad news, still no sign of her. Hrm.

Still no river rat?

Well, I've caught up to chapter 8 of Messiah CompleX and still no sight of Rogue. I have this theory - I've typed it up once before but Blogger promptly ate it. I'll give you the cliff notes version. (this theory will be dead by the end of the week when Ch 9 drops, but at least it's out of my system)

I suspect she's the traitor they're referring to in chapter nine. Let me tell you why. (uh possible spoilers ahead?)

...but first - background info!

Last we saw our favorite little redneck, she was still on a slab at Sinister's place, awakened briefly in an incredibly hackneyed little scene where Gambit's 'love' awakened her, (*barf*) after which she promptly went back to her coma. Prior to that she essentially had a instant death touch and the strong urge to touch people, whether it killed them or not. Also, there's the added bonus of 8 billion minds stuck in her head. (good luck digging Destiny's Diaries out of there, Sinister) So yeah, Rogue is probably a hair insane right now.

Moving on..
The X-Men seemingly left her there, and only came to get her when they thought the mutant baby was at Sinister's as well. It could easily be said that Rogue was an afterthought in that rescue. Afterwards, Wolverine and crew were all after Cable. If/when Rogue comes out of her coma, it will look as though she'd been abandoned.

In IRL - Mike Carey is Vague...
In interviews, Mike Carey keeps saying that something "major" will come involving Rogue. However, he won't say what. Last time a "major" thing happened, it was the Strain 88 Virus, followed by the Hecatomb. So to Mike, "major" = "major disaster". (that man makes me cranky...)

Add insane Rogue, urge to kill, previous criminal behavior, stupid loyalty to Gambit, (how many times has he tried to kill her? Three?) and a dash of abandonment issues. To me, that equals traitor.

Chun Li : Now 50% less Chinese

In the Dec. 22nd post, Majoria's News reported that Kristin Kreuk will be playing Chun Li in the upcoming movie Street Fighter: Legend of Chun Li. She's half Dutch and half Chinese (although her mother was born in Indonesia - imdb=good info) She plays Lana Lane in Smallville. (I'm the one geek on the planet that doesn't watch that show)

I don't suppose I could complain too much about the casting, but I still find it hard to believe that there isn't one single Chinese girl on the friggin planet that could play Chun Li in the upcoming movie.

imdb.com has some interesting trivia that may give some insight as to why she was cast:
  • Growing up she did gymnastics, swimming, martial arts, and theater (in high school).
  • Has a purple belt in karate.
  • Does not smoke.

So there you have it - hope the script is really good. Gilgamesh at kikouken.com thinks Kristin will be faboo, and who am I to argue with the guy who runs the best Chun Li shrine on the internet(s)?

KOF XI On the CHEAP!

Did your lazy family give you cash this holiday season? Well - here's a good way to spend it!

Amazon.com has King of Fighters XI up for 12.99! Good lawd, that's cheap. It retails at brick and mortar stores for 19.99. If you're feeling sassy, you can get this game AND NeoGeo Battle Coliseum for 27.98

30 bucks for some fantastic 2D goodness. Cheap and delicious.
(no, I have no amazon referral account so I get nothing out of referring you that way)

That dame is a dude...

It's official, Capcom has verified that Poison is, in fact a post-op tranny.
Read about it at Kotaku!
This news I had heard from an SNK fanboy friend of mine (hi, Kyo!), so Poison wasn't too much of a surprise. Shion, however, was. (although Fighter's Generation lists Shion as a girl, I hear she's a he)

Also, one of the commenters mentioned the BBD song of the same name and the song got stuck in my head. Misery loves company so here ya go...

Marvel Manga & Games

Kotaku reports that Marvel will be getting more involved with their game devlopment. If this turns out as bad as the proposed X-Men/Wolverine manga, then we're all doomed.

They're talking about it (the manga) at Newsarama and Japanator has some pictures of said manga designs. Neither the spandex fans nor the anime fans seem to like this.

Sadly, this is quickly degernating into "This is bad! Because this is bad, I am supported in my hatred of all anime!
*sigh*

Let's not go there, people. Blanket statements are ugly.
And for the record, I prefer my Wolverine to be burly, not bishy, kthx.

X-Men manga? What?

More Marvel manga coming your way. Did Marvel not learn it's lesson last time?

But wait, there's more. It's a reverse harem manga.

NO, REALLY.

Freezepop has Brainpower

Freezepop has posted the song that they contributed to Rock Band on their MySpace page. (they're not in GH3 due to the fact that Harmonix had nothing to do with it). At any rate, the Harmonix/Freezepop love continues with 'Brainpower' - a song about naming your band. It's rather cute, really. (doesn't really match with my punked out swamp-rat looking drummer chick, but whatev.)

If you were wondering, (which I am very sure you were not) the Rock Band name my friends and I selected was Impact Replay (yes we watch MXC too much)

Ninja Nonsense ep 1 streaming

ANN reports that Ninja Nonsense (the anime formerly known as Shinobuden) has episode 1 up at IGN to watch (for free!). This episode is apparently released to mark the release of the Ninja Nonsense box set. It's 89.99 but you get the entire series and all this swag:

Plus: Reversible covers, character bios, interviews with the Japanese cast, TV spots 1-18, textless openings and closing, "Kurukururin" (closing) full-size video, original U.S. trailer and Right Stuf / Nozomi Entertainment trailers. Also: Four booklets featuring production journals, "Happy Doodles" from the Japanese staff, liner notes and more. Finally: The Complete Collection - Limited Edition includes a special mini-manga by creator Ryoichi Koga celebrating the box set release, an Onsokumaru squeeze toy and a ninja-trainee headband.

That's a lot of stuff.

Cease & Desist Update

Wrapping up the cease and desist emails sent out to Comcast users,
Japanator remarks that BayTSP is full of lose and fail.
I concur.

Opinion: New Exiles 2 Solicitation

Note: Incoming bias against Gambit. Sorry, I just can't stand that character. If you like our pink underwear as outerwear, floppy haired, "ragin' cajun" then you should probably just skip this post entirely.

Majoria's News reported that Marvel's solicitations for February 2008 (ack!) have been posted here.
Of interest (and I use this term loosely), New Exiles issue 2. Here, I'll repost the text for you.

NEW EXILES #2

Written by CHRIS CLAREMONT
Penciled by TOM GRUMMETT
Cover by MICHAEL GOLDEN
The Exiles have barely arrived in a new dimension before they're struck by disaster! Sabretooth, Psylocke and Mystiq find themselves in the middle of a long-running conflict between the two most powerful figures on the African Continent, the Black Panther and Ororo. As for Rogue, her fate ends up in the hands of a young man who calls himself Gambit - but if you think that tells you what to expect from this character and this story, try again! He needs Rogue to help him save his parents - Oh, and did we mention he breathes water?
32 PGS./ Rated A…$2.99

How to make Gambit even more stupid and/or irritating than he is now?! Turn him into Aquaman, naturally. *headdesk* Claremont used to be my hero. I have no idea wtf has happened to him since...well, since X-Treme X-Men. ;_;

Also, I can't say this for sure, as I am not up to date with the books and may be completely off base; but it really seems as though they take these alternate universes (Ultimate and such) and just retell the same old stories for new audiences. Why not take the opportunity to really change things up? (although Pompous!Rogue in NE has promise) I know in Ultimate X-Men they coupled up Storm and Beast, which was neat, but stuck Rogue with Gambit's powers. Can I please get a break from the "Romy" pairing?
...
Please?

Emails sent....otaku panic

and rightfully so, really.

Anime News Network, the Otaku and (the blogger)Gia have all posted info about a thread in the AnimeSuki forums. Essentially, users were sent notices that they were participating in copyright infringement via Bittorrent anime downloads. The notices cite the DMCA.

(copy & pasted from wikipedia.org)
Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) is a United States copyright law which implements two 1996 WIPO treaties. It criminalizes production and dissemination of technology, devices, or services that are used to circumvent measures that control access to copyrighted works (commonly known as DRM) and criminalizes the act of circumventing an access control, even when there is no infringement of copyright itself. It also heightens the penalties for copyright infringement on the Internet.
------

This has the possibility of turning into a 'big deal', although most anime fans know that this is likely not the end of fansubbing.

As a concerned fan, I'd check out the larger articles at the following sites:
ANN
a geek by any other name (gia)
the Otaku
and the (very long) AnimeSuki thread which lists specific titles being mentioned.

Another One Bites the Dust...(X-Men 205)

So, there's a preview for X-Men 205 up at ComicVine - part 5 of the Messiah Complex storyline and apparently someone dies. Will it be a Jean Grey "I'll be back" kind of death? Who knows. (probably) However - if they kill who I think they're going to kill, oh the joyous day I will have.
Dancing, I will do it.

Oh, and a redesigned Lady Deathstrike? Niiiiiice.

If Mr. Sinister is bringing back his old creations, tell him to bring back Madelyne Pryor again. It makes no sense, but what the hell - Goblyn Queen was cool.

Bad Ideas from House of M

While looking up something entirely different, I was in the Wikipedia entry for Rogue (X-Men) and found this little horrifying tidbit.

NOTE: In an interview post-House of M, writer Brian Michael Bendis revealed that he originally intended for Rogue to permanently absorb the powers of Genis-Vell and for her to become Marvel’s next cosmic powered character. However, the idea was nixed as the current writers and editors of the X-titles didn’t like taking Rogue in this direction, so Rogue only temporarily kept Marvel’s powers for the House of M series.

I don't know who was on the book that rejected that idea, but I'd like to buy them flowers and chocolates. Have Rogue floating around with Quasar, Silver Surfer and that lot? No, thank you.

Viz makes with the Live Action

Japanator reports that Viz has licensed a bunch of (rather good) live action movies based on anime. The titles are Lovely Complex, Honey & Clover, Nana & Nana 2. The odds of me seeing or owning these movies is quite high.

I wonder though, how long till the Love*Com anime gets licensed? It's already complete (and they usually don't bother waiting till the last eps have shown if a company is serious about licensing a series - I am looking at YOU, Wallflower.)

For anyone interested in buying it, I strongly suggest you purchase it online somewhere because the local brick and mortar stores not only don't allow you to preorder these games (didn't allow me to preorder Fatal Fury Battle Archive OR KOFXI) they'll also give a dirty look for free and ask you to buy Halo 3.

it hurts....

In Wired and The Wired

So I saw this in my mailbox today, but Gia @ theOtaku.com posted it first. Darn your speediness!

Anyway, this month's Wired magazine has a cover story about manga and it's impact in the US. Every time I'm ready to dump my subscription, a cool issue like this arrives.

In other news, while searching for a Lain image, I found a class on Tokyo Cyberpunk. No, really. Here's the description of the class. Also, longest sentences EVER.

Introducing the history, forms, and discourses of Japanese "cyberpunk" in contemporary anime and film, this course explores the urban dreams (and nightmares) that constitute cyberpunk's post-apocalyptic vision of Neo-Tokyo. Viewed not as a reflection of contemporary Japanese society but rather as its defamiliarization, Japanese forms of cyberpunk are investigated as sites of contestation for competing ideologies and the delineation of new possibilities of existence, new forms of being, at the intersection between carbon- and silicon-based forms of intelligence and data-processing. Attention is also given to intertextual linkages with cyberpunk films such as Casshern and Avalon.

Sega Superstars Tennis

Item originally found at dsfanboy.

So, Sega is making a tennis game. Okay, but not earth shattering. The exciting bit is the character lineup that will be playable!

From the press release: SEGA Superstars Tennis has over 15 playable SEGA idols including Sonic the Hedgehog, AiAi from Super Monkeyball fame, Ulala of Space Channel 5 and Amigo from Samba De Amigo. In addition to their own unique attributes, each character will also come equipped with their own superstar tennis skills, putting a whole new spin on each match played!

full press release here

The even better news is that this game will be released on pretty much all of the current and/or last generation systems. (PS2, PS3, XBox 360, Wii, DS) Superstars Tennis drops early next year. (My Wii may end up with a second tennis game!)

Neo Geo releases for the Wii

Happy days are here - on the off chance you're not on Nintendo's mailing list, some important virtual console releases have dropped this week!

The first NeoGeo games have arrived on the VC. You can download Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting and (my favorite) World Heroes for 900 points each.

These are great fighting classics, and you should pick one up. Just don't expect them to be as deep as Tekken or Soul Calibur. The King of Fighters series got plenty deep once the series got rolling. Go forth and download for fighting fun.

Us Comics vs Manga (wow, long)

So over @ scans daily there was some discussion of American Comics vs Manga and why people prefer one over the other. And of course, each side is ready to throw stones at the other. I stopped to think of what the major differences are and how it may motivate people to choose one over the other. (get comfortable, this is long. Go grab a snack, I'll wait...)

Let's go over the big obvious stuff first.
Printing size and color (how's that for a graphic design nerd start?)
US comics are generally all color, (4 color process I believe). Paper size is 6.9x10.5 and a regular comic book will be between 30-50 pages long and probably glossy. Nice paper and pretty colors drive the cost up quite a bit. To the point where the cost of a trade paperback would be somewhere between 15 to 25 dollars.

Manga, on the other hand, is almost always black and white, with the exception here and there of having the first few pages in color. Tankobon size is 5x7.5, no gloss. Smaller paper, little or no color and no gloss makes the price of these books cheaper even though they have many more pages than American comics (roughly a couple hundred pages) They range from 8.99 to 12.99 but most manga have leveled out at 9.99.

So, when your local geek has ten bucks to spend and every other penny is already invested in bills or sunk into your gas tank, manga volumes become more and more attractive.

Ok, say you're the Daddy Warbucks of geeks (clearly you don't play collectible card games. I respect that) and cost isn't an issue. Here is where it gets tricky. (and the bit where I plagarize myself, but I'm okay with that)

The giant scope of manga available is the key. If it exists, there is a manga about it. It's like Rule 34, but less terrifying. You want a manga about rollerblading and gang fights? Done! (Air Gear) something about good sorcerers hunting down the bad ones and whipping them into submission in a good way? Done! (Sorcerer Hunters) But what if you want a story about a local otaku club sitting around and interacting? Ah, you can have that too (Genshiken). Something with no story whatsoever that is somehow hysterical? Yes! (Azumanga Daioh, Strawberry Marshmallow, Lucky Star)

This is where the division begins in my mind.

The sheer existence of shoujo manga ("girl's manga") is important. The complete emphasis on slice of life/emotion/dialogue is something I didn't find in many American comics when I first got into manga about 15 years ago. The art style is even different. Many shoujo manga don't bother with backgrounds in their panels. Aside from the occasional establishing shot, it's mostly just character interaction and dialogue. Backgrounds are unnecessary. I'm likely to step on toes here, but many comic books were/are not marketed to an audience that wants less ass kicking and more shoe staring and long emotional diatribes. It's quite telling that they're labeled as girl's manga. It's painfully clear that most US comics are not marketed towards girls at all. (yes, this is a larger argument, but let's stay on topic here, ok?)

Now don't get your panties in a bunch over this label. It's not to say that only girls can read girls manga. That's ridiculous. That's akin to saying that girls can't read US comics. We do, lots of us and we're often cranky about it! I know plenty of guys that read non - shonen manga and/or shoujo manga. Let's not get paranoid about how reading manga may somehow magically alter our sexuality and/or preferences. That's obnoxious as well.

I am positive there are American exceptions, but upon visiting the local comics shop, it's all about the spandex and ass kicking. Don't get me wrong, I love my spandex and ass kicking. I adore it. I get vicarious thrills when I read about She Hulk tossing around cars and just punching the hell out of everything. However, there is also the "single female lawyer" side to She Hulk. There's sure to be an audience that wants to see her more as Jen Walters the lawyer and less as Shulkie. The option for a emotional/romantic comedy/ slice of life is an important thing.

As for me, I read everything. I don't discriminate. I love my X-Men, Birds of Prey, & She Hulk. However, I also love the fact that I have options like Mars, Tramps Like Us (great book unfortunate title translation) & Peach Girl.

As they say on the internet(s), Your Mileage May Vary- in other words, it's all about personal preference. You may think I am entirely full of crap and hey, you're entitled to that (although if you think that and read this blog then you confuse me mightily.)

So, the bottom line to all of this? To me, variety. Spice of life and all that.

Much love to: scans daily, Marvel, DC, Tokyopop, and Urban Dictionary.

Witchblade Anime News

There's an article up at Newsarama with the English voice actress of Masane and the ADR of the US release. Interesting to read, although I am not even remotely sold on Masane's English voice. The voice of Rihoko will be played by Carrie Savage. I got to meet her at MetroCon this year. She's a really nice lady and is very talented. I am sure her take on Rihoko will be good. You can find out for yourself as IGN has the first ep up for FREE - (streaming of course, but free is free - don't complain.)

There are your usual snarky comments below the article. Skip those. Some people complain just for the sake of complaining. Calling GONZO a crap company is just wrong.

Go Away, Jessica Biel

First there were rumors of Jessica Biel being up for the lead in the Chun Li street fighter movie. This was ridiculous because she's not Chinese, and Chun Li is very much so.

Now in a further attempt to defile my geekdom, rumors abound that she wants to play Wonder Woman in the upcoming Justice League film.

No Jessica. NO. *swat* Go away, whitebread lady.

I know darn well I won't get any Greek actresses for our favorite amazon in the same way they keep trying to cast Chun Li as a white girl. Can we at least get someone vaguely ethnic to play this role? Perhaps someone with naturally dark hair? Am I asking for too much here?

I'll cast my vote for Salma Hayek, even though she's currently preggers. It doesn't film for a while, she'll do fine. She's lovely, shapely, and can do action films. She may have to work on the accent though.

So, this is how you fit around 30 supporting characters into a movie trailer 0_0; Geez, look at the yearbook pic at the very end if nothing else. Oh and Negi is played by a girl...and no one is surprised.

Pirate Bay Attacks!

The Pirate Bay is suing various companies for hiring hackers to attack their site. Behold their blog post.

Thanks to the email-leakage from MediaDefender-Defenders we now have proof of the things we've been suspecting for a long time; the big record and movie labels are paying professional hackers, saboteurs and ddosers to destroy our trackers.

While browsing through the email we identified the companies that are also active in Sweden and we have tonight reported these incidents to the police. The charges are infrastructural sabotage, denial of service attacks, hacking and spamming, all of these on a commercial level.

Wow. They have giant kahones cojones to even attempt this. (thanks Jiff ^_~)
